SU appoints new deputy vice-chancellor for learning and teaching

Stellenbosch University (SU) has appointed a new deputy vice-chancellor for learning and teaching, who will assume his role on 1 January 2021.

This was according to rector and vice-chancellor of SU, prof Wim de Villiers, in a recent announcement of Prof Deresh Ramjugernath’s appointment by the SU Council, on 21 September. Ramjugernath is the current deputy vice-chancellor of research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

“Higher education faces immense challenges in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic,” De Villiers said in the notice. “But, at the same time, exciting opportunities have opened up, and we look forward to exploring the new landscape of learning and teaching with prof Ramjugernath at the helm.”

Ramjugernath said that he was looking forward to working with SU staff and students, as well as stakeholders, in realising the vision of the university.

“I am excited at the opportunity to join Stellenbosch University,” Ramjugernath told MatieMedia. “The institution is one of the leading universities on the African continent and has a vision to make a significant contribution to improving the lives of South Africans and global citizens through [its] Vision 2040.”

Ramjugernath will succeed prof Arnold Schoonwinkel, who held the position of deputy vice-rector for learning and teaching at the university for eight years.

“The SU Council appointed a very accomplished manager and academic in the person of prof Deresh Ramjugernath to the position of vice-rector (Learning and Teaching),” said Schoonwinkel.

Schoonwinkel, who has reached the prescribed retirement age, will be stepping down from the role at the end of this year, he said.
